Berlin is playing host to a number of art events and exhibitions in the week between July 20 and 26, featuring works by artists such as Senga Nengudi, the collective Additive Addicted, Danny McDonald, Eva Lofdahl and many others. Here is Blouin Artinfo’s list of these must-visit art shows for the coming week:Opening Soon:“Additive Addicted: Alchymia Digitalis” at theKunstgewerbemuseumJuly 25 through August 15As the seventh chapter of the exhibition series “Design Views” by the Kunstgewerbemuseum and the International Design Center Berlin, “Alchymia Digitalis” presents works by the design collective Additive Addicted. The collective — formed by the product designer and art historian Babette Wiezorek and the interaction designer Dawei Yang in 2017 — presents a symbiosis of digital production technologies and one of the oldest design materials, porcelain. In order to highlight the qualities of these elements, Additive Addicted “develops parametric and generative strategies by means of which the movements of a 3D ceramic printer are programmed and controlled,” says the museum. “This creates objects with filigree, highly complex structures that are reminiscent of textiles.”https://www.smb.museum/museen-und-einrichtungen/kunstgewerbemuseum/home.html Recently Opened:“The Matter in Harmony” at Galerie Thomas SchulteOn view through September 15The show brings together works by artists including Richard Deacon, Angela de la Cruz, Julian Irlinger, Idris Khan, Jonathan Lasker, Fabian Marcaccio, Allan McCollum and Michael Muller alongside a large wall drawing by Albrecht Schnider. As a part of this exhibition, the artist Jonas Weichsel will also present one of his new works, before his first solo show of abstract paintings at the gallery in September.https://www.galeriethomasschulte.de/“Open Vol. 2” at Galerie EIGEN + ARTOn view through August 25This summer exhibition brings together a selection of artworks by artists from outside Galerie EIGEN + ART’s program. The show features both emerging and established artists including Yang-Tsung Fan, Marion Fink, Zora Janković, Justin Mortimer, Andreas Muhe, Ulrike Theusner, Raul Walch and Alexander Wolff.http://www.eigen-art.comLast Chance to See:“Search Parameters” by Danny McDonald at Galerie Isabella BortolozziOn view through July 28New York-based Danny McDonald’s third solo exhibition with the gallery is showcasing new sculptures. The artist has employed a concept designed to illustrate results from a search engine, to construct “dreamlike and nightmarish narratives, the scenarios of which depict characters drawn from popular culture engaged in these types of futile searches,” says the gallery. The works include various found objects such as masks, toys, props, statuettes, and action figures stacked together, exhibiting symbolic gestures. “Sherlock Holmes, C-3PO, Pinocchio, Liberace, James Dean & Marlon Brando, Ronald McDonald, The Devil, Uncle Sam and various other monsters are repurposed and deployed in comedic and alarming ways and shown frozen in a state of anxious exploration,” the gallery says.http://bortolozzi.com/Eva Lofdahl's “Respite” at Galerie NordenhakeOn view through July 28One of Sweden’s most prolific and challenging artists, Eva Lofdahl, marks her debut in Berlin with “Respite,” showcasing new works. Lofdahl is known for her often-indefinable objects and installations, and most of the works on view consist of modified everyday objects such as umbrellas, safety pins and wooden broom heads, as well as a series of works on paper. “The title ‘Respite’ emerged from a collaborative dialogue and suggests a moment in time, an interval, a breathing space, or also a practice of allocating exceptional resources toward recovery,” the gallery says. Creating various shapes with these unique objects, the artist constructs an eccentric and vulnerable landscape within the exhibition. “Lofdahl challenges our conventional ways of seeing things with paradoxical metaphors in the form of sculptures, objects, paintings and drawings, and site-specific works,” the gallery says.http://nordenhake.com/Also on View:“Artist Complex: Photographic Portraits from Baselitz to Warhol” at Museum fur FotografieOn view through October 7, 2018Drawn from the collection of the German photographer Angelika Platen, the show presents about 180 photographic portraits of artists created between 1917 and 2000. The exhibition is divided in three sections, showing not only the diversity of the photographic works, but also providing a review of the art and art history of the 20th century. By focusing on traditional as well as experimental facets of artist portraiture, the show rediscovers works by artists such as Berenice Abbott, Brassai, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Gisele Freund, Heinz Hajek-Halke and Arnold Newman. It also looks at lesser-known photographers, including Helga Fietz, Hildegard Heise or Jerome Schlomoff. Iconic portraits by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Marina Abramović are also on view.https://www.smb.museum/museen-und-einrichtungen/museum-fuer-fotografie/home.htmlSenga Nengudi at Spruth MagersOn view through September 8, 2018The Colorado-based artist Senga Nengudi (born 1943, Chicago) has been challenging conventions of sculpture, photography and performance throughout her career, and she was a member of the African-American avant-garde in Los Angeles and New York in the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition, marking the debut solo show by the artist in Germany, brings together four recent sculptures from her “R.S.V.P” series. She started working on this series in the late 1970s, inspired by the transformation brought on by her pregnancy. She created “delicate, webbed and knotted forms” of sculptures, the gallery says, using nylon stockings, sand and metal objects. Stretched across walls to floors, these decidedly abstract sculptures assume the stances and proportions of bodies.http://www.spruethmagers.com“Two Camels and a Saint: The Antique Pilgrimage Site of Abu Mina in Egypt” at the Bode MuseumOn view through January 31, 2019In the fourth century B.C., the tomb of Saint Menas became one of the major pilgrimage sites of Late Antiquity Egypt: Abu Mina, just outside of Alexandria. Until its destruction during the period of Persian occupation in the early seventh century, countless believers from across the Roman Empire made the pilgrimage. In this exhibition, Bode Museum presents selected architectural sculptures, pilgrims’ souvenirs and everyday objects from Abu Mina from the collection of the Museum fur ByzantinischeKunst.www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/bode-museumClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibitions.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin

National Museum of Natural History Welcomes Nation’s T.Rex

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History has announced the return of the Nation’s T. Rex. The Tyrannosaurus Rex will be the centerpiece of the new 31,000-square-foot fossil hall which is due to open on June 8, 2019.“The Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton will be featured in the reopened hall alongside more than 700 specimens, including dinosaurs, plants, animals, insects, and some never before objects displayed at the National Museum of Natural History. The exhibition will depict a journey through time of more than 3.7 billion years of life on Earth. Visitors will discover their impact on life’s story as it plays out today and their role in shaping its future,” the museum says. The hall is renamed as the David H. Koch Hall of Fossils — Deep Time, in recognition of a $35 million gift from David H. Koch, the largest single donation in the history of the museum. The Deep Time project is the largest and most complex renovation in the museum’s history. When the fossil hall closed in 2014 for renovations, all specimens on display were removed for conservation and study by Smithsonian scientists. Several spectacular dinosaur fossils from the hall were disassembled and taken to Research Casting International in Ontario, Canada, where they were repositioned into dramatic, new and more scientifically accurate poses. Those fossils, including the T. Rex, which is on loan to the Smithsonian for 50 years from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are being transported back to the museum for permanent installation in the new hall in a specially branded FedEx Custom Critical truck. The delivery is part of the company’s FedEx Cares “Delivering for Good” initiative.“The return of the Nation’s T. Rex is an important milestone in the countdown to the grand opening of the new hall in June 2019,” Kirk Johnson, Sant Director of the National Museum of Natural History commented. He further said, “This hall will be unlike any other — it begins in the past and ends in the future. Using extraordinary fossils, compelling interactive and multimedia experiences, and latest science, visitors will be inspired by the fascinating story of our evolving planet and the life that has inhabited it and understand the critical role they each play in determining its future.”“Creating the new fossil hall involved the largest building renovation in the museum’s history. Interior walls that had been put into place during the past century were removed, structural columns were relocated, all electrical and mechanical systems were updated and windows and skylights were replaced to allow natural light to permeate the hall. In addition, spaces on the ground floor below — the substation in the basement and up to the building attics — required infrastructure renovations and upgrades to make way for the dinosaurs. The project cost $125 million,” says the museum release.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                              Founder: Louise Blouin

Over 1,300 items of African ceramics from the collection of Franz, Duke of Bavaria are going to Die Neue Sammlung – the Design Museum – as donations or items on permanent loan, and will thus be made accessible to the public. Starting in the 1960s, His Royal Highness the Duke of Bavaria has established an important collection of African ceramics. The collection comprises examples from different African regions and focuses in particular on ceramic vessels from the 19th and 20th centuries. In terms of scope, precision of selection, and quality of the individual pieces, the collection is widely regarded as one of the most important collections of African ceramics worldwide. Despite having such a strong reputation among the specialists, it is not widely known. The range of designs oscillates between the abstract and the figurative. On the intentions behind his gift and loan to Die Neue Sammlung, H.R.H. Franz Duke of Bavaria said: “In addition to the purely scholarly interest, it is precisely in connection with design, and by extension to ceramics from European cultures that we gain a new and interesting perspective on the African pieces.”  The collection at Die Neue Sammlung comprises over 5,000 one-off ceramic objects and about 1,000 items of industrial ceramics. Though the focus lies on ceramic pieces from Europe (Germany, England, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia), the museum also holds sets of works from Asia (China, Japan and Korea) as well as the U.S.“The donation and permanent loan of African ceramics form an important extension to our collection and a major addition to our non-European holdings. We are very grateful for the exceptionally generous gift,” comments Angelika Nollert, Director of Die Neue Sammlung. From the summer of 2019 onwards, Die Neue Sammlung will be honoring this generous gift by hosting a comprehensive exhibition supplemented by a publication and an accompanying program with international guests.“I am delighted that Bavaria as a center of culture is gaining such a marvelous addition and would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to HRH Franz Duke of Bavaria in the name of all art lovers of the Free State,” said Minister of Science and the Arts Prof. Marion Kiechle at Die Neue Sammlung in the rotunda of Pinakothek der Moderne.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                              Founder: Louise Blouin

After several years of renovation, “Dorset House” at Shelburne Museum – home to its renowned waterfowl decoy collection, reopened for the public earlier this year. A special exhibit, showcasing the museum’s ‘waterfowl decoy’ collection is on view through October 21, 2018.Shelburne Museum’s unparalleled collection of 1,400 wildfowl decoys was established with a 1952 gift of more than 400 superior examples from Joel Barber, a New York City architect, artist, and carver. Barber’s groundbreaking book ‘Wild Fowl Decoys’ (1934) was the first to identify the importance of decoys as a uniquely American art form. Since then, the Museum’s decoy collection has grown to be one of the finest and most comprehensive in the country. This exhibition features superb works by master craftsmen from all over North America including A. Elmer Crowell of Cape Cod (“the Leonardo da Vinci of decoy carvers,” as per the Boston Globe), Captain Charles Osgood, Albert Laing, Lem and Steve Ward, Bill Bowman, and Shang Wheeler. It highlights renowned decoy factories such as Mason Decoy, American Decoy, Dodge Decoy, Rose Folding Decoy, and Stevens Decoy.Handpicked by Shelburne Museum founder Electra Havemeyer Webb to house her renowned decoy collection, the “Dorset House” has been restored with new wiring, insulation, climate control, lighting, security and fire detection systems, reinforced beams, repaired slate roof, marble steps, refurbished porches, handicapped access, and state-of-the-art display cases with LED lighting. The exhibition is on view through October 31, 2018, through Shelburne Museum, 6000 Shelburne Road or PO Box 10, Shelburne, USA.For details, visit http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide-venues/287470/museum-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                              Founder: Louise Blouin

Getty Villa hosts “Palmyra: Loss And Remembrance”

“Palmyra: Loss and Remembrance,” an ongoing exhibition at the Getty Villa, showcases funerary portraits from the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.Palmyra (“Place of Palms”), located in an oasis in the Syrian desert, flourished between the first and third centuries AD. At the crossroads of trade routes between the Roman and Parthian Persian empires, the people of Palmyra embellished their tombs with distinctive funerary portraits. These vivid likenesses of finely dressed men, women, and children, often accompanied by inscriptions naming local families, highlight the rich cultural exchanges and interactions taking place throughout the eastern Mediterranean and Near East“Control of the Near Eastern lands conquered by Alexander the Great in the 320s BC gradually shrank back to Syria and the eastern littoral of the Mediterranean, where it remained into the first centuries of the Roman Empire. But the influence of Greek and Roman art in the further reaches of Alexander’s conquests lingered much longer, and we see remarkable efflorescences of classicizing sculpture in the first centuries AD in Parthia (Mesopotamia and Persia), Gandhara (Pakistan), and, closer to the Mediterranean, at Petra and Palmyra,” says Timothy Potts, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum. “The remarkable works of art from the latter site are the most vivid artistic evidence of a cosmopolitan, polyglot, and multicultural world that flourished in the first centuries of the Christian era. Sadly, much of this extraordinary artistic heritage has been the subject of horrendous vandalism in recent years — which makes those works that survive even more precious.”“These vivid personal portraits bring the viewer face-to-face with ancient individuals and their families, expressing their values and reflecting developing social trends,” says Kenneth Lapatin, curator of the exhibition. “At the same time, they convey ancient cosmopolitanism and connections between diverse cultures.”This long-term exhibition, showcases a collection of the finest surviving Palmyran funerary portrait sculptures, alongside historical engravings and photographs from the Getty Research Institute. The sculptures are loaned from the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and Stanford University. The exhibition is on view through May 27, 2019, at the Getty Villa, 17985 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272, USA.For details, visit http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/j.-paul-getty-museum/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com                             Founder: Louise Blouin

The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts “The Face of Dynasty: Royal Crests from Western Cameroon”

Four monumental 'tsesah' crests, created by Bamileke master sculptors of Western Cameroon, are on view at The Met exhibition “The Face of Dynasty: Royal Crests from Western Cameroon.”Tsesah crests are believed to have been developed to give expression to Bamileke notions of royal power. Worn atop the head or held by an emissary of a fon’s inner circle, the tsesah was a towering presence in performances that punctuated matters of state, from royal funerals and enthronement rites to the delivery of judicial sentences.Tsesah crests, only 15 of which survive today, hold a prominent place in the collection repertory of sculpture from sub-Saharan Africa. 20th century art critics in the West were captivated by the grandeur and originality of the tsesah crests but no American museum has displayed more than one tsesah at a time before this exhibit at The Met.“Showcasing the crests side by side ‘The Face of Dynasty: Royal Crests from Western Cameroon’ will offer the visitor a rare opportunity to examine several examples of this epic royal art form, while exploring its significance, history, and development in the region starting in the early 18th century. The exhibition is the first public presentation of The Met’s recent acquisition of a tsesah crest,” writes The Met.The masterpiece, which has been acquired by The Met, is deemed to have been carved 200 years ago and may have been a prototype for the extant tsesah corpus. The three other crests showcased at the show are loaned from American collections. The exhibition also features a 27-feet-long ‘ndop display cloth’ that was used to delineate the space at royal state events and ceremonies where a tsesah would have appeared. The exhibition is on view through September 3, 2018, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028, USA.For details, visit http://in.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/the-metropolitan-museum-of-art/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com        Founder: Louise Blouin

Know Your Artist — By the Numbers: Brett Whiteley

Brett Whiteley (1939 –1992) was an Australian artist highly influenced by Vincent van Gogh and post-war artists such as Francis Bacon. He is best-known for his Avant Garde style. Whiteley attended The Scots School, Bathurst and The Scots College, Bellevue Hill. In the beginning, Brett’s works can be categorized as abstract, but gradually he moved on to more a more figurative style of Expressionism. He created unusual compositions with intense colors in various styles. His best-known works of the 1960s included a series of paintings inspired by the British mass murderer John Christie and series of Expressionist landscapes. Whiteley had many shows in his career, he traveled and painted extensively in Italy, England, Fiji and America and his works are in the collections of every major museum in Australia and some in other countries. Whiteley was made Officer of the Order of Australia in 1991. Whiteley won the Archibald Prize for portraiture twice, in 1976 and 1978. It’s one of Australia’s most prestigious art awards. He won in 1976, “with his painting ‘Self portrait in the studio,’ marking a turning point for the prize. The self portrait is seemingly reduced to the artist’s face reflected in a hand-mirror within the vast expanse of the blue of his studio and its collection of objects,” writes the Art Gallery of New South Wales. “Whiteley followed this win with an even more expressive work in 1978: ‘Art, life and the other thing,’ a triptych that explored three issues — the status of photographic representation in portraiture, the Dobell controversy and the representation of Whiteley’s own battle with heroin addiction.” (The Dobell controversy pertained to another winner of the Archibald who had broken with tradition by painting a portrait in an unconventional style in 1943.)Whiteley is also well known for a series of paintings of his wife in the bath and landscapes of the Sydney harbor. The auction house Menzies will feature seven of his artworks at its “Our Current Catalogue” sale on August 9 in Sydney. Here is a performance analysis of Whiteley’s artworks in the auction market:1. Sales Trend in the Past 20 YearsThe artist had banner sales in 2007 and 2014, with totals of nearly $12 million each year.In 2007, Whiteley’s second and third biggest sales were registered. That year, “Olgas for Ernest Giles” was the most expensive Australian painting sold at auction for $2.4 million and “Opera House” for $2 million. Between 2008 and 2009, his total sales remained at $2.6 million (each year) which could be attributed to a significant share (35 percent) of artworks being sold in the price range of $5,000 to $10,000.But in 2014, his sales totaled $11.8 million, bolstered by the sale of "Gauguin" and "Arkie under the Shower" at the auction house Menzies where the works fetched price over $1 million.2. Volume of Artworks on Offer vs. Bought-in RateWith 2007 being a record-setting year for the artist in terms of sales, it was also the year when the lowest bought-in was registered at 4.2 percent (or, only 3 lots remained unsold) over the period of ten years. The bought-in rate reached the peak twice, in 2008 at 42.6 percent and in 2012 at 43.6 percent. Some of his highest estimated works like “Sloping up on the Olgas (I) (with Crow)” (high est. $1.2 million) and “Young kookaburra taking its first laugh” (high est. $725,970) remained unsold, which affected Whiteley’s total sales in the year 2012.In the past four years, however, there was a downward trend in terms of the bought-in rate, as the graph below shows, which reached 13 percent in 2017. The sales was registered at a low of $6.8 million (refer section-1).3. Bought-ins by Auction HousesThe graphic below represents the artist’s lots and bought-in rates at the top two auction houses. Overall, the lots offered at Menzies were high and the bought-in rate was registered low as compared with that at Sotheby’s.4. Average and Median Sale Price Trend in the Past 20 YearsThe average and median prices in 2012 were at all-time highs — $296,807 (average price) and $70,809 (median).  The average and median prices of the artist have been going down after reaching a peak in 2012.5. Highest-Priced ArtworksWhiteley’s highest ever sale was “My Armchair,” painted in 1976 and signed and dated lower right: “Brett Whiteley 1976” inscribed upper right: “interior at Lavender Bay under sunlight,” which sold for $3.7 million at Menzies Important Australian and International Fine Paintings and Sculpture Sale in South Yarra on October 31, 2013.“Olgas for Ernest Giles” was his second highest sold work; it brought in $2.4 million in 2007 at Deutscher-Menzies.“Opera House,” an oil work on canvas that also included cardboard, collage, shell and ink on board, was painted in 1971-1982 and fetched $2 million at Sotheby’s Woollahra in 2007.6. Price Band in Which His Works Have Sold in the Past 10 YearsMost (32.4 percent) of his works sold in the price band of $10,000 to $50,000; followed by 22.3 percent, sold in the range of $5,000 and $10,000. Very few of his works (18 lots) sold for more than $1 million in the past 10 years. 7. Where His Works Have Sold the Most in the Past 20 YearsAbout 40 percent of Whiteley’s sales occurred at Menzies in the past two decades; followed by Sotheby’s at around 30 percent. In terms of volume, while over 41 percent of the artist’s work is being sold at Menzies and Sotheby’s, a significant 30.2 percent is being sold at other auction houses. 8. Top Selling Media in the Past 20 YearsWhiteley’s oil paintings represent the best return with $83 million for 259 lots. http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder Louise Blouin
