"Beer: A History of Brewing and Drinking" at Temple Newsam

Beer, Britain’s first national drink is the focus of an exciting exhibition at Temple Newsam House in Leeds. The exhibition’s inspiration goes back to the 18th century, when beneath the opulent halls of Temple Newsam House, was stocked a huge network of cellars and thousands of gallons of beer. Aristocrats would host sumptuous banquets, ale would flow freely, and guests would raise toasts to the kings and queens."Beer: A History of Brewing and Drinking" at Temple Newsam looks at the many roles beer and ale played at the mansions and in British culture between 1650 and 1850.  For this exhibition — the experts have uncovered from local archives — new stories and facts about life at Temple Newsam. The exhibition, at large, reveals life on Temple Newsam Estate through the eyes of the staff and aristocrats who lived, worked, brewed and drank there.“We’ve found that a long and esteemed tradition of country house beer and brewing was established at Temple Newsam. A brewhouse is mentioned in the first inventory of 1520 and beer played an important role in life at the house for people from all different kinds of backgrounds until the late 19th century," says Dr Leila Prescott, curator at Temple Newsam House. She adds, “Today we host tours of the cellars but research has shown that in 1869, those same cellars were filled with barrels containing 3,800 gallons of ale and 2,200 of beer.”The exhibition highlights interesting stories of the time, — like the story of female brewer Elizabeth Pease, who provided ale for the estate for more than 30 years during the 18th century. Beer and ale were always part of the estate’s celebrations like ‘Rent Day,’ and occasions like weddings or military victories.  Beer was, at that time, also used to treat a range of ailments and diseases like jaundice to ‘the King’s Evil.’“When King George recovered from his illness in 1789, Lady Irwin laid on 1,366 gallons of ale for her tenants,” says Dr Leila Prescott. The exhibition showcases objects from Leeds’s important collection of ceramics and offers visitors a new perspective of the Temple Newsam House. The exhibition is on view through October 27, 2018 at Temple Newsam, Temple Newsam Road, Leeds LS15 0AE, UK.For details, visit https://www.leeds.gov.uk/museumsandgalleries/lothertonhallClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin

The J. Paul Getty Museum has appointed Ulrich Birkmaier as their senior conservator of paintings, taking the seat from Yvonne Szafran, who just retired from the post at the end of June     after a 40-year career at the museum. Birkmaier will assume office at the Getty on September 10, 2018.Coming from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was chief conservator, Birkmaier will lead the Getty Museum’s department of paintings conservation, which oversees the long-term study and care program of one of the finest collections of Old Master and nineteenth-century European paintings in the United States. The department also operates an active program of study and treatments, including technical and materials analyses on works from the museum’s collection, as well as from other institutions. This appointment marks Birkmaier’s return to Getty after his one-year stint at the museum as a graduate intern in its paintings conservation department at the beginning of his career. Later he was appointed the assistant paintings conservator at the museum, and subsequently he held positions at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the Getty Conservation Institute (as a conservation guest scholar), before moving to his current institute in 2000."I am thrilled to return to the Getty to join this respected and talented team of museum professionals. Having spent some of my formative years there, I have long admired the breadth, scope, and excellence of the collection, programming, and outreach that have established the Getty as one of the leading arts institutions in the world. Working together with a congenial group of art historians, scientists, and educators, the conservation department and its renowned conservators have over the decades been instrumental in furthering the museum’s mission, and I am honored to continue and further build on this legacy,” said Birkmaier.“Ulrich Birkmaier is an esteemed conservator who has overseen the care of many of the world’s most important works of art,” said Timothy Potts, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum while announcing the appointment. “Paintings conservation at the Getty Museum is world-renowned. Not only do we care for our own extremely significant collection but we also study and conserve paintings from museum collections in Europe and across the U.S. through our conservation partnerships. It was no small feat to find someone with the skill, experience, and insight to lead our world-class team, and in Ulrich we have found someone who will invigorate and steer our conservation efforts to ensure the Getty Museum maintains its leadership position in the field.”  http://www.blouinartinfo.com/                              Founder: Louise Blouin

Blouin Artinfo creates a list of these must-visit art shows for its readers.Recent Openings:“New Painting” by Christopher Le Brun at Lisson GalleryJuly 4 through August 18“New Painting, a fresh series of large-scale abstract paintings by Christopher Le Brun, marks the British artist’s debut solo with Lisson. “The glowing, scintillating veils of color in the artist's recent oil works on canvas contribute to the constant exchanges of movement, energy, warmth and light occurring throughout his radiant show,” the gallery says. References from music and literature are often found in the titles and works in the exhibition, which includes examples from Le Brun’s drawing and printmaking practices.  https://www.lissongallery.com/“Towards Infinity: 1965-1980” at Simon Lee GalleryJuly 4 through September 7The exhibition brings together a series of major works conceived by artists from the Conceptual art movement during 1965 and 1980.  The15-year period was marked by major social and political upheaval, including significant civil unrest and global conflict, and Conceptual art offered a socio-political critique to this situation with a challenge to the traditional forms of representation. “Taking its title from Giovanni Anselmo’s seminal work of the same name, ‘Verso l’infinito’ (1969), the exhibition explores the dematerialization of the art object and the dismantling of concepts that had bolstered the definition and context of traditional art-making well into the 20th century,” the gallery says. The featured artworks include a wide range of media —photography, film, video, performance and installation —where the artists prioritized idea over form. Adhering to the fundamental premise proposed by Anselmo’s “Verso l’infinito,” the featured works challenge “the constructs of time and space to create an art that is at once forward-looking, in flux and without limits,” the gallery says.https://www.simonleegallery.com/Also on View:“August Sander: Men without Masks” at Hauser & WirthThrough July 28, 2018The exhibition is dedicated to the German photographer August Sander (1876-1964). During a career that spanned six decades, he was one of the first photographers to make an effort to document human diversity. Through his photographs Sanders presented a sociological portrait of Germany that included images of its people and the urban and rural landscapes that they were part of, the gallery says. The display features a selection of rare large-scale photographs by Sander made between 1910 and 1931. These paint a sociological picture of the country leading up to and through the Weimar Republic.https://www.hauserwirth.com/“Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art” at Tate ModernThrough October 14, 2018“Shape of Light is the first major exhibition to explore the relationship between [abstraction and photography], spanning the century from the 1910s to the present day,” the Tate says. “It brings to life the innovation and originality of photographers over this period, and shows how they responded and contributed to the development of abstraction.” On display are more than350 works by more than 100 artists, ranging from photos by early experimenters such as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray to exciting new work by Antony Cairns, Maya Rochat and Daisuke Yokota, made especially for the exhibition.http://www.tate.org.uk/“Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier” at the Design MuseumThrough October 7, 2018This show was conceived and co-curated with Azzedine Alaia before his death in November 2017. It was the subject of an extended feature by the critic Sarah Moroz in Blouin Artinfo, which you can read here. Designs in the exhibition span Alaia’s entire career starting from the early 1980s; they include more than60 creations, featuring the zipped dress, the bandage dress and the corset belt among others. The master couturier was famous for the way he created many of his form-fitting fashion designs, by “sculpting” them by hand from the fabric that was draped over a model’s body.https://designmuseum.org/Katharina Grosse’s “Prototypes of Imagination” at the GagosianThrough July 27, 2018This is the artist’s first major gallery exhibition in London. Grosse paints vast abstract images that burst with color. “Approaching painting as an experience in immersive subjectivity, she uses a spray gun, distancing the artistic act from the hand, and stylizing gesture as a propulsive mark,” the Gagosian says. The heart of the show is a single painting of oceanic scale on loose cloth. Grosse made it to fit the space of the gallery. Grosse is known for her in situ paintings in which color is rendered directly onto architecture, interiors, and landscapes. Her new approach creates a bridge between her studio canvases and the in situ paintings, the gallery says.https://www.gagosian.com/“The Past is Present — Becoming Egyptian in the 20th Century” at the British MuseumThrough July 22, 2018The show features a range of objects from 20th-century Egypt. Through the display, one discovers how ancient Egypt has provided the means for its modern-day version to create an identity, the museum says. The central focus of the exhibition is the emblem of Banque Misr (Bank of Egypt). It was founded in 1920, right after the Revolution against British occupation in 1919. The newly acquired objects on display for the first time “illustrate the complex ways that ancient heritage was reclaimed and integrated into the everyday life of a society that was both modernising and confronting immense political change,” the museum says.http://www.britishmuseum.org/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibitions.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin

Denver Art Museum is collaborating with The National Museum of Cambodia to explore the cultural significance of Ganesha in South East Asia. The exhibition “Ganesha: The Playful Protector” has as its centerpiece, a 29-inch tall cross-legged figure of the Hindu deity created between the 7th and 8th centuries. The exhibition was inspired by a cultural exchange following the DAM’s return of the 10th-century “Torso of Rama” to Cambodia in early 2016.Brought on loan The National Museum of Cambodia, the 29-inch tall cross-legged figure, featuring human arms and an elephant head, is known as one of the earliest Ganesha figures of mainland Southeast Asia. Along with this important artwork of the pre-Angkor era, on view are sculptures, paintings, and textiles of the elephant-headed deity that are a part of DAM’s own collection.Ganesha, who is been worshipped in India and Southeast Asia over 400 years, has crossed both geographic and religious boundaries. It has inspired numerous representations of art throughout the Asian subcontinent over time — all of which is surveyed in a bid to showcase the deity’s iconographic changes. The exhibition traces Ganesha’s story of becoming one of the most worshiped deities in Hinduism and its expansion to Buddhist and Jain religious traditions. Also is featured in the presentation are  ancient and modern representations of Ganesha from India, Nepal, and Burma. A two-foot tall touchable Ganesha sculpture, and a video profiling the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, which is attended by millions of Hindu devotees annually, are also on display.“Ganesha: The Playful Protector” will be on view through October 28, 2018, at the Denver Art Museum,  100 W 14th Ave Pkwy, Denver, CO 80204, USA.For details, visit https://denverartmuseum.orgClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. www.blouinartinfo.com Founder: Louise Blouin

This autumn, the British Museum is hosting an exhibition based on the life and legacy of King Ashurbanipal — the last great ruler of Assyria. Titled “The BP exhibition I am Ashurbanipal: king of the world, king of Assyria” opens on November 8.The show features over 200 objects from different parts of the empire and brings to light how one of the most prominent monarchs of Assyria left a mark on world history. The display consists of the museum’s expansive collection of Assyrian treasures and significant loans from around the world and many of them have never traveled to the UK before. The exhibition looks at the reign and influence of the 7th century BC Assyrian King Ashurbanipal. Emerging as a powerful ruler, “from his capital at Nineveh, Ashurbanipal ruled a vast and diverse empire, shaping the lives of peoples from the shores of the eastern Mediterranean to the mountains of western Iran,” the museum says. The king juggled a number of roles and responsibilities ranging from negotiating family politics to the pressures of kingship, and the will of the gods. “Ashurbanipal, proud of his scholarship, assembled the greatest library in existence during his reign. Guided by this arsenal of knowledge, he defined the course of the empire and boldly asserted his claim to be ‘king of the world, king of Assyria,’” the museum adds. The first ever major show to explore the life of this monarch, it gives details of his story through records of his palace sculptures, hundreds of cuneiform texts that have survived from his library, and via the objects that archeologists discovered while working in the region. According to the museum, “innovative displays bring to life the tumultuous story of Ashurbanipal’s reign; his conquest of Egypt, the crushing defeat of his rebellious older brother, and his ruthless campaigns against all who defied his rule.” The display includes, “massive stone sculptures, intricately carved reliefs, painted glazed bricks and rare wall paintings evoke the splendor of the cities and palaces. Delicately carved ivories, extravagant metalwork, cosmetic vessels and gold ornaments show how the elites lived in splendor. Ornate chariot fittings and elaborate weaponry reveal how this was an age of conflict, as rival kings fought for power and glory,” the museum writes. Unlike his predecessors, Ashurbanipal claimed that he could read, write, and debate with scholars. Drawing from the museum’s collection of documents dating to Ashurbanipal’s reign, the exhibition will recreate his library and highlight its scale, significance, and contents. Several of the objects on display are from the archeological sites in Iraq such as Nineveh and Nimrud. These sites were targeted and destroyed by Daesh (IS). The concluding section of the show highlights the challenges faced while protecting Iraqi cultural heritage. It highlights the work done by the ‘Iraq Emergency Heritage Management Training Scheme.’“In response to the destruction of heritage sites in Iraq, the British Museum developed this scheme to train Iraqi archaeologists in rescue archaeology and emergency heritage management,” the museum says. An overview of the project’s training and research will be highlighted through exclusive interviews with participants and film footage of the excavations.“The BP exhibition I am Ashurbanipal: king of the world, king of Assyria” runs from November 8, 2018, through February 24, 2019, at the British Museum, Great Russell St, Bloomsbury, London WC1B 3DG, UK.For details, visit: http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/british-museum/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin
